Kailash
/ Manasarover is the most
venerated but the least visited sacred
place in the world. The supremely
sacred site is visited by no more
than a few thousand pilgrims each
year. This holy region is known as
navel (center) of the universe, attracting
scholars and researchers from all
over the world. Mt. Kailash (also
known as the 'Sumeru Parbat' in Hindu
epics) provides a spiritually enriching,
naturally unique and a truly rewarding
journey of a life-time!No planes,
trains or buses journey anywhere near
the region and even with rugged over-land
vehicles the journey still requires
weeks of difficult, often dangerous
travel. The weather, always cold,
can be unexpectedly treacherous and
pilgrims must carry all the supplies
they will need for the entire journey.
Mt. Kailash: Mt. Kailash
(6714 m) also known as Tise,
Kailasa or Kang Rinpoche (Jewel of
the Snows) has since time immemorial
been celebrated in many eastern cosmologies
as Mt. Meru. As the center of the
physical & metaphysical universe,
Mt. Kailash is sacred to the Hindus,
the Buddhists, the Jains, and the
Bonpos. For the Hindus, the mountain
represents the seat of Shiva. For
the Buddhists, a terrestrial projection
of the cosmic mandala of the Dyani
Buddhas & Boddhisatvas .…
The Wheel of Life. The Jains reverse
the mountain as the site at which
the first of their saints emancipated.
And in the ancient Bon religion of
Tibet, Kailash was the secred nine
storeys Swastika Mountain, upon which
the Banpo founder Shenrab alighted
from haven. The 53 Km. Kailash circuit
is the holist of pilgrimages and the
beacon, which draws most traveller
to western Tibet. It is said that
a single Parikarma erases the accumulated
sins of a lifetime, while 108 cicurmbulation
will achieve Salvation.
Lake Mansarovar:
Sprawling below Mount Kailash is the
sacred lake Manasarovar (4510m), where
ritual bath will deliver a pilgrim
to brahm's paradise and drink of its
water relinquishes the sins of a hundred
lifetimes. Near Manasarovar is another
large lake, Rakshas Tal, the ‘Demon
Lake’ that holds far less spiritual
significance. To travel for days on
this remote plateau with the chance
encounters of nomads herding their
sheep or yaks is to be transformed
into another way of life, to see and
become part of such a devout pilgrimage
as shown by pilgrims around MT. Kailash
and lake Manasarovar is overwhelming
and a life time experience.
